Choosing Liquor Store Software in India
The 2026 buying checklist: what genuinely matters, what's marketing fluff, and the red flags that cost you later.
The right liquor store software is the one your counter staff will actually use at 9 PM on a Saturday. Features matter, but adoption matters more — which is why the 2026 shortlist questions below focus on speed of daily use, data-entry burden and trust, not feature-count.
The checklist
| Must-have | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Pre-loaded Indian brand catalogue | 1000+ brands with sizes and MRPs — you should never type "McDowell's No.1 180ml" from scratch |
| AI / automated purchase entry | Photograph a real distributor invoice in the demo. Does it read all lines? Does it verify totals against the bill's footer? |
| Per-size SKU tracking | 180ml and 750ml must be separate counts, separate alerts |
| Chained daily register | Enter a back-dated sale in the demo and check whether opening/closing still reconcile |
| Per-shop stock isolation (multi-shop) | One shop's stock must never silently satisfy another shop's sale |
| Role-based access + audit log | Staff record, owners approve; every action attributable |
| Phone-first | If it needs a desktop and a trained operator, it will be behind reality within a week |
| OTP login | Shared passwords on a shop computer are how data walks out |
Red flags
- "OCR-based" entry with no verification. Raw OCR that doesn't reconcile against the invoice's printed totals will silently corrupt your stock. Ask: what happens when the scan is wrong? The only good answer is "it gets flagged for review before saving".
- Per-year licence + AMC + hardware. Desktop POS pricing in India commonly stacks ₹10,000–₹30,000/year with "annual maintenance" on top. Phone-first apps (including Liquor Pro, which is free) removed this cost class entirely.
- No audit ledger. If the vendor can't show you who changed a stock number and when, you're buying a prettier paper register.
- Excel exports as the "reporting module". Daily category/size summaries should be on-screen in one tap.
Questions to ask in the demo
- Scan my latest purchase invoice — all of it. How many lines did it get right, and how does it show me the ones it's unsure about?
- Enter yesterday's sales today. Do the register's opening/closing numbers still chain?
- Show me the audit trail for one stock movement, end to end.
- What does it cost in year two? (Licence + AMC + support + hardware.)
- What happens to my data if I stop using the product?
Total cost reality check: the biggest hidden cost is not the licence — it's data entry. A system that saves 25 minutes per invoice and 30 minutes at closing returns more than any pricing difference between vendors.
